Introduce of hydrophobic lipophilic materials

Treating oily wastewater and preventing oil pollution become more and more important, and people also pay more attention to it.

The oily wastewater came from catering, metal processing, grain and oil processing, leather processing, oil exploitation and oil refine industry. We generally use hydrophobic and lipophilic materials to filter out the oil and separate oil & water.

So, what kind of hydrophobic lipophilic materials are on the market?

Chemically synthesized oil-absorbing materials, which can divided into three kinds:

1. Organic polymer fiber

It mainly includes polypropylene fiber, alkyl vinyl polymer fiber, polyurethane foam and etc. This oil-absorbing material accounts for the largest share of market . It uses the hydrophobic and lipophilic characteristics, also uses the gap between the polymer molecules and the gap between the fibers to achieve the absorption and encapsulation of oil.

The advantage is that the oil absorption speed is fast and oil absorption rate is high, and the material can be reused several times.

The disadvantage is that the oil-absorbing material will leak oil due to pressure during transportation, and such oil leakage will cause pollution if not handled well.

2. Polymer fiber after graft modification of organic hydrocarbons

Such material is commonly used in large area of water. This kind of high oil absorption resin material has certain internal pores, under the action of the oil group and the oil solvent, the volume expands, only swelling but not dissolved, the oil molecules are wrapped in the mesh structure of the macromolecules, so the oil absorption ability and oil retention force is strong, and will not leak oil under pressure after oil absorption

The disadvantage is that the oil absorption speed is not so fast and price is high, after the oil is separated from the suction, the material cannot be reused, and it must be burned and discarded.

3. Gel type efficient oil absorbing material

The oil absorbing material is composed of a three-dimensional network structure by cross-linking monomer molecules with good oil absorbing properties. It is made into a pellet and sprinkled on the polluted water, then absorb oil, expands and encapsulates the oil, forming a gel type software, which is very effective in preventing the oil spreading.

Such material has the advantages of low toxicity, safe and convenient use, and high oil absorption rate.

The disadvantage is that the price is high, after the oil is squeezed out of the gel, the fragile structure of the molecular cross-linking will be changed, cannot be used again so just be incinerated and destroyed

Composite material, hydrophobic oil absorption

1. Composite of inorganic and organic materials

Expanded graphite, a material composed of phenolic resin and activated carbon. The advantages of the two materials complement with each other, can form new and larger "oil storage pores", and show stronger adsorption capacity.

2. Composite of natural organic and synthetic organic materials

The composite oil absorbing material with high oil absorption rate was prepared by grafting polymerization of cotton fiber with acrylic long chain ester. It hardly absorbs polar solvents such as ethanol and water, and has high oil absorption rate to kerosene and toluene.

Compared with the traditional monomer polymer, the oil absorption rate and oil absorption rate of the composite high oil absorption material prepared by crosslinking polymerization of wood pulp cellulose and alkyl methacrylate are significantly improved, and the overall production cost is also reduced.

Cellulose itself contains carbon-hydrogen compounds, that is, contains hydrocarbon groups, which can be grafted with other hydrocarbon groups cross-linked, so that wood fiber, bamboo fiber, wood wool, cotton, rice husk, corncob, bagasse fiber as the base material, can produce oil absorption materials.

MstnLand's hydrophobic and lipophilic filter is a kind of oily wastewater filter using modified nano-graphene based composite material as filter medium. The modified nano-graphene-based composite filter element can effectively remove oil slick, dispersion, dissolved oil and some soluble organic solvents in water. It has efficient oil separation performance (output oil content ≤30mg/l), long service life and can be reused after regeneration through extrusion and vacuum. It is a reliable and cost-effective solution for the advanced treatment of oily wastewater.
