Industrial production and human life will produce wastewater containing petroleum, petroleum products, tar and its fractionates, edible animal and vegetable oil and fat, we call it oily wastewater. Oily wastewater has the characteristics of high COD and BOD, a certain odor and color, flammable, easy oxidation decomposition. It is usually lighter than water and less soluble in water. Oil in wastewater can be divided into four types: slick oil, dispersed oil, emulsified oil and dissolved oil. Oily wastewater is a kind of industrial wastewater with large quantity, wide influence and serious harm. 

The harm of oily wastewater is mainly reflected in the following aspects: deterioration and pollution of natural water body and soil, negative impact on human health, and influence on the survival and growth of animals, plants and crops. Machinery manufacturing: emulsion in turning process, cleaning and lubrication of machining equipment will also produce oily sewage. 

Light industry: such as wool washing wastewater produced by textile factories, tannery tannery waste water, etc.
